Many non-resident families invest in France, particularly in vacation homes. Most of the time, this investment is made without taking into account the inheritance tax that may be due in France.

 

CAUTION ,

the fact of beneficing  from a convention on income tax does not protect you in the context of inheritance unless a convention or a tax clause concerning inheritance and donations exists 

Yet France is a state that taxes inheritance heavily 

France's estate tax rate is the third highest among OECD countries, after Japan (55%) and South Korea (50%), and the highest in the EU.2 The average and median rates among OECD countries are 15% and 7% respectively.

Moreover, the fact that you can be considered as a tax resident of another state and benefit from a tax treaty on income taxation does not protect you in the context of inheritance unless a special treaty exists
